Breast Implant Popularity

Breast augmentation is one of the leading cosmetic procedures in the United States and it is only growing in popularity. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ latest report, nearly 300,000 women received breast implants in 2015, collectively spending over $1 billion on this cosmetic procedure alone. Breast augmentation has flourished over the past 15 years due to improvements in surgical technology and the implants themselves, and the procedure is only predicted to become more prevalent in the future.

Why Breast Implants?

No matter the type of implant chosen, the goal of breast augmentation is to create fuller, firmer, and more symmetrical breasts. The reasons behind augmentation are as varied as the women themselves, but most choose this procedure to revitalize their self-confidence and achieve their desired feminine figure. Loss of breast shape or size due to weight loss, aging, and pregnancy are some of the most commonly cited factors for women who undergo breast augmentation.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants are currently the most common type of implant used. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that silicone implants accounted for 80% of all breast augmentation procedures in 2015. This type of implant is filled with a silicone gel and it is the most popular choice because the gel creates an effect that is similar to natural breast tissue. If a leak occurs, the gel may be contained within the implant shell or it may breach the shell and enter the breast implant pocket. Most often it is contained within a layer of scar tissue that forms around the implant. Silicone  implants are FDA approved but women with these implants will need to visit their plastic surgeon annually to check for any problems.

Saline Implants

Saline implants were used in 20% of breast augmentation surgeries in 2015. Because they are filled with sterile salt water, a leak will result in the collapse of the implant but the saline will be safely absorbed into the body. They can be filled during surgery so minor adjustments can be made during the procedure. Some women feel that saline implants feel and look unnaturally firm, so the popularity of this type of implant has decreased significantly since the introduction of the silicone option.

Gummy Bear Implants

First introduced in the U.S. market in 2012, the gummy bear implant has been gaining popularity in breast augmentation procedures. The gummy bear implant is a type of silicone implant that is made of a thicker gel which results in a firmer implant that is less susceptible to leak. This newer implant appeals to some women because of its decreased rupture rate, but it is firmer and especially useful in breast reconstruction.
