If you have undergone a mastectomy or have been scheduled for one due to cancer diagnosis or cancer risk reduction, consult with Naples Plastic Surgery on how post-mastectomy breast reconstruction surgery can help restore the shape and appearance of your breasts.
Also used to restore breast tissue loss due to lumpectomies, infections, or trauma, a breast reconstruction can be an amazing step to achieve a restored body image. Dr. Mark Walsh and Dr. Andrew Bonett use their surgical expertise to reconstruct natural, aesthetically pleasing breasts that can help you regain any lost sense of femininity and sexuality that can result from the loss of breast tissue.
A breast cancer diagnosis is a very difficult time in any woman’s life. It’s not only difficult from an oncological or cancer standpoint-knowing that you must go through treatment and surgery but also, from a reconstructive plastic surgery standpoint where patients will start questioning, “Well, what will I look like without a breast or a reconstructed breast,” and they have legitimate concerns about body image.
Here at Gardner Plastic Surgery we see a lot of patients with breast cancer and we have preoperative consultations to explain to them what their reconstructive options are. Now, given the different types of surgeries that may exist, there are various options for reconstructions. We can use implants, we can use your own tissue, or even a combination of both in certain circumstances.
Every patient is different, every patient is unique, and the goals that each patient may have will help us decide together what is the best option for breast reconstruction for you. If you’re seeking breast reconstruction or have had reconstruction in the past and are seeking options to improve your size, shape, or symmetry, please don’t hesitate to come see us for your consultation.
Post-Mastectomy Breast Reconstruction in Naples
Post-mastectomy breast reconstruction surgeries at Naples Plastic Surgery are performed under general anesthesia in the practice’s state-of-the-art surgical suite in Naples. While many breast reconstruction surgeries are conducted soon after the mastectomy, the procedure can also be performed months or years after a mastectomy, lumpectomy, or other breast trauma.
Prior to any surgery, Dr. Walsh and Dr. Andrew Bonett always meet with their individual patients in a one-on-one consultation and physical examination to evaluate all elements of the planned cosmetic procedure. This evaluation will be tailored according to whether the mastectomy is planned or has already been performed, with typical elements addressed during the consultation including:
How the surgery is actually conducted is dependent upon several factors, such as whether the reconstruction is relying on natural tissues taken from other parts of the body, implants, or a combination thereof. Natural tissue reconstruction can utilize skin, fat, and muscle from the back and/or abdomen, as well as fat transfers via liposuction of the abdomen, thighs or buttocks. Incision patterns in the breast area vary depending upon the scope of reconstruction and size of implants, and the surgery may include the use of a tissue expander. Some breast reconstructions may require several stages, with the rebuilding of the nipple and areola sometimes needing to be performed at a later date.
The recovery period for post-mastectomy breast reconstruction depends largely upon the scope of the mastectomy and reconstruction, as well as the overall health of the patient. Usually, an outpatient procedure, most patients are released to go home several hours after the procedure, though some stay overnight for additional monitoring and care in our comfortable and private surgical suite.
After the procedure itself, patients can expect to experience bruising, swelling, and soreness in procedure areas, but this will be alleviated with prescribed pain and anti-inflammatory medications. Your surgeon may suggest other post-operative care conditions as warranted. Many patients are able to return to work and most normal daily activities within a week, though some patients may need an additional week or two of recovery time.
Complete honesty from Dr. Gardner, which I really appreciated. The staff could not have been any more pleasant. I will go back.
Dr Gardner and his staff are exceptional service providers. I had a face and neck lift and was extremely anxious about the entire procedure. I was able to talk to former patients of Dr Gardner and the nurses and Dr Gardner were very reassuring. I stayed overnight at the surgery center afterwards and the nurse was exceptional as was the nurse (Olivia) that picked me up and stayed with me the first day at home. I was expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised with how easy the recovery was which I credit to the skills of this surgeon. I was out to dinner 6 days later. I am very pleased with the results and am very glad I went through with the procedure. I highly recommend this practice.
My 3rd procedure with Dr Gardner !! My first was 2014, next in 2016 and this one in 4/2023 . ALWAYS , always treated with the most respect by everyone there and the trust I have for them is everything . I feel like their most important patient before, during and after . Love this team of professionals
