Consider Skin Condition Before Age When Contemplating Facelifts

Anyone contemplating a facelift generally has numerous questions about the specific procedure and how it will work with their facial structure and skin type. While there are various rejuvenating facial procedures, a range of individual characteristics determines in part the effectiveness and outcomes of each. And while the age of the patient plays a role, age itself should not be the determining factor about making the decision about when to have a facelift.

With a stellar reputation and years of delivering artistic excellence in facelift surgery, Gardner Plastic Surgery has refined the procedures for all ages. Our doctors have gained an acute insight into how each procedure works with various facial structures and skin types, and works closely with each patient to determine and meet their aesthetic goals. Patient age will be an issue raised during the initial consultation in his Naples, Florida-based practice, but skin condition will be the primary consideration in tailoring the procedure.

Types of Facelifts Offered by Gardner Plastic Surgery

In general, there are three types of facelifts:

  • Upper Facelift
  • Mid Facelift
  • Lower Facelift.

A full facelift, as commonly known and offered by both Dr. Gardner and Dr. Baccaro; is a combination of the mid and lower facelift procedures. This covers everything between the eyes and chin, it helps improve cheek fullness, nasolabial folds, jowls, neck contour, and platysmal bands.

The lower facelift is also referred to as a mini facelift and covers everything between the corners of your mouth to the chin. This option improves jowls, neck contour, and platysmal bands. The upper facelift is also known as a brow lift and offered as a separate procedure. Sometimes, it is performed in conjunction with a facelift or blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery.)

The Question of Age Versus Skin Condition

Everyone ages differently, possesses different skin traits and types, and has experienced varied impacts on their skin over the years, caused by such things as the amount of sun exposure, diet, and smoking.

That said, age can play a role on skin elasticity, which in turn helps dictate the overall facelift results and their subsequent longevity. Thus, most women in their mid-forties to early fifties generally have skin elasticity most conducive to generating optimal results. Of course, some women in their sixties and seventies, who have maintained their health and fitness, also have skin that can yield excellent facelift results. While most men don’t seek out information about facelifts until they reach their fifties and sixties, skin elasticities are similar and generate similar age-related results.

Instead of focusing on age, though, our doctors recommend considering the condition of the skin and signs of aging when contemplating a facelift. Focus on:

  • Wrinkles underneath the eyes and crow’s feet
  • Deep lines at the corners of the mouth and around the nose
  • Jowl formation and the loss of jawline definition
  • Overall sagging and loose skin
  • Excess fat deposits in the neck

It is less likely that women and men under the age of 40 will need a facelift. Those starting to worry about signs of aging may want to first consider non-surgical facial rejuvenation techniques as offered by dermal fillers, injectable treatments and other minimally invasive procedures.
