Advanced Hair Restoration with Naples Plastic Surgery

Whether as a natural component of the aging process or a result of premature male or female pattern baldness, no one likes to experience the thinning of their hair or seeing the emergence of bald spots. The appearance of a full set of hair is typically a core component of one’s overall attractiveness and a feature tended to on a daily basis. Thus, the onset of hair loss often leads to a loss in self-esteem. Those who experience premature balding in advance of aging-related hair loss take an additional hit to their self-esteem, as the loss in hair often makes them look older than their biological years.

Overall, up to 50 million men and 30 million women suffer from some form of male/female pattern baldness or thinning hair. As with other facial features that are compromised by aging and/or other factors, cosmetic surgery offers options designed to address the problem and help restore one’s youthful looks. In Naples, Florida, Dr. Paul M. Gardner, Dr. Leo M. Baccaro, and Dr. Jason Crespo offer the most technologically advanced hair restoration treatment at their Naples Plastic Surgery practice.

Advances in Hair Restoration Technologies

Cosmetic hair restoration techniques and technologies have made significant advancements since the 1950s when hair plug transplants first became the standard in hair transplantation. The hair plug technique involved punching out small round sections of skin with hair follicles on the back of the head and inserting them into balding regions of the scalp. The procedure was considered only moderately effective because the plugs failed to produce a natural looking hair line and the tufts of hair often failed to mesh naturally with the surrounding hair.

By the 2000s, hair plugging had been replaced by two advanced procedures that produce a more natural look with less invasiveness and scarring. Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) involves removing a six- to 10-inch strip of follicle laden skin from the back of the head. The incised area of the scalp is closed and sutured, with the incision hidden by the surrounding hair. Meanwhile, the strip is divided into up to 2,000 tiny grafts containing from one to several hairs. These tiny grafts are then surgically implanted into the bald spots of the scalp.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a similar procedure, but rather than making tiny grafts from a strip of skin, each hair follicle is individually removed from the hirsute part of the scalp and transplanted into the balding area. This procedure does not leave a distinct scar, but instead leaves tiny dots where each follicle was removed, which surrounding hair easily covers.

Your Hair Restoration at Naples Plastic Surgery

With its limited invasiveness, scarring, and optimal results, Naples Plastic Surgery offers its hair loss clients the FUE procedure and utilizes the most advance hair restoration technology available in the hair loss industry. The revolutionary NeoGraft® system uses pneumatic controls to precisely extract each individual hair follicle for immediate transplantation into targeted areas of the scalp. As the first and only FDA-approved FUE device, NeoGraft® has established a solid record at creating natural-looking results with minimum discomfort during the procedure. With minimal bleeding and fewer complications than other techniques and devices, recovery time is typically less than a day and involves fewer restrictions on returning to normal daily activities. The system is so effective that it is often used to help fix visible linear scarring from previous FUT transplantations.
